UCIFI has undertaken multiple initiatives to promote academic freedom and strengthen shared governance across the UC system. Below are several of our most active ongoing efforts.
These efforts respond to consequential questions facing the University of California and advance practical, evidence-based reforms across the UC system.
Academic freedom
UCIFI supports principles that discourage university leaders and academic units from taking positions on political and social controversies unrelated to the university’s core mission. Such restraint protects open inquiry and leaves members of the university community free to reach their own conclusions.

This work includes engagement with proposed revisions to the Academic Personnel Manual and broader questions of consistency across UC campuses.

UCIFI convened a multi-campus faculty working group to examine evidence concerning standardized tests in undergraduate admissions. The initiative evaluates academic preparation, predictive validity, equity, grade inflation, and the role tests can play within holistic review.
